How we work banner image

Our Sustainability goals are selected firstly because they are in our realm of influence and, secondly, are where we are aiming to be a positive force in the world. If we do business in the right way, strive for the highest achievements and keep our customers at the heart of what we do we will succeed in both our business and our sustainability goals.

Our sustainability work is shaped around four key pillars;

We have a key vertical Poultry supply chain covering from farm to fork. In this we will work to identify the sustainability challenges and opportunities, and work with partners to deliver more sustainable solutions. This vertical is selected because it is the area where we can have a material impact due to the scale of our operations or buying power in that supply chain.

Under Environment we work on three issues:

Waste reduction - our waste reduction vision:

Reducing food waste and loss is embedded in our operations and we create value through beneficial use of all our waste.

Waste reduction and reuse has long been a focus of the company, and it remains a key focus for the future. By 2014 over half our factories achieved zero to landfill, with significant recycling or beneficial use of what was once considered waste.

Water Management - our water management vision:

We will be efficient users of water and save more in our supply chain than we use in our sites.

For so long water has been treated as a utility, available when we turn on the tap, the same way we expect electricity or gas to be available when we flick a switch. But thinking on water is changing, especially in 2 Sisters. It is a critical commodity, as important as many of the ingredients and just as valuable.

Climate change and energy - our climate change and energy vision:

We aim to be a carbon neutral business and a net energy producer.

Our energy use in factories, farms and fleets are intrinsically linked not only to the commercial success of our business, but also to our impacts on the environment and climate. With a significant carbon footprint in our operations and a major internal and third party logistics operation serving our customers, this is one area where we can achieve significant success in sustainability.

Under people we work across two areas:

Our colleagues

As an employer of choice, we contribute positively to employment and education. Without our colleagues, communities and customers we do not have a business, so focusing in these areas is one of our highest priorities.

Our sites are intrinsically linked to the communities where they are located, be it as a good neighbour or where our colleagues live. Where our sites are close to local communities we engage with them so they understand our work, the opportunities the local business brings and help to deal with any queries that occur. We also fundraise across the company for a wide range of charities and local causes.

Economic Success

In economic success, as well as being a profitable business, we focus on two specific areas:

Innovation - our sustainability vision for innovation

We consistently deliver significant growth through sustainable product innovation.

Quite simply, innovation is the cornerstone to our success in the future. Incremental and breakthrough innovation in product, process, ingredients and packaging are going to change our business and play a critical part in achieving our sustainability goals. We have a huge range of innovators, from our New Product Development teams through to Agriculture, Procurement, Supply Chain, Operations, Technical and Engineering and we are constantly striving for new, better and more sustainable ways of doing things.

Customers - our vision for customers

We are recognised leaders in sustainability and our customers and stakeholders acknowledge this.

Our customers are at the heart of everything we do, and that extends to all aspects of our sustainability activities. We aim to be a partner to our customers and stakeholders, not just being led by them but supporting the development and delivery of their own sustainability aspirations in all areas.

Sustainable Raw Material

Our two areas for sustainable raw materials, as well as the verticals:

Sustainable agriculture

We have a passion for food and that is intrinsically linked to agriculture. We are one of the biggest customers of UK farming, so a sustainable agricultural sector is critical to the future success of our business. We cover a wide range of production systems ranging from farm assured, through to free range, Freedom Food, corn fed and organic, as well as producing bespoke breeds, such as Aberdeen Angus. We strive to improve standards of production, develop sustainable methods and ways of working, and influence the way our partners operate.

Procurement - Our Procurement Vision

All our products and services are sourced from partners who support and deliver our sustainability aspirations.

One of the great sustainability challenges of our generation will be feeding 9 billion people on the planet, many of whom will be achieving increase in wealth. The growing population and increasing middle class bring bigger demands on land, what is produced and how it is produced. The potential impact on sensitive ecosystems is huge, and we will work with suppliers to prevent this through use of responsible sourcing standards. Where relevant we will continue to support and champion responsible sourcing standards and develop approaches where they do not exist in the market.
