Triple sandwich success for 2 Sisters
Three 2 Sisters sandwich supremoes have come tops at this year’s ‘Sammies’ - the ‘Oscars’ for the British sandwich industry.
The 2 Sisters British Sandwich Awards 2016 winners include Kim Hartley, Martin Wilsher and double entrants Justyna Nowicka and Dawn Evans.
Kim, a development chef at Gunstones, has been crowned British Sandwich Designer of the Year 2016, with a delicious winning concoction of a trio of Mini Bombay Bundt Bagel Rolls in the Geeta’s Premium Mango Chutney Category.
Kim said: “I am utterly thrilled to have won this award for 2 Sisters, having worked for the business for over 16 years, I can’t believe I have never entered the Sammies before!”
Although Kim never entered before – her track record with top-tasting sarnies was obviously excellent – as one of her sandwich creations appeared on Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch programme earlier this year.
Martin Wilsher, divisional development chef for Food to Go, also won ‘The Harvey and Brockless Chipotle Relish Sandwich Designer of the Year’ for his ‘Smokin Hog’ creation. This was one of six category titles in the competition.
Martin said: “This is such a massive occasion for us. It’s the culmination of about 5 months’ work since we were sent the original samples, created the new recipes and various stages of the competition.”
Justyna Nowicka and Dawn Evans won ‘The BSA Technical Excellence Award’ for identifying an alternative washing method for fresh produce.
Chris Gilbert Wood, group technical director, said: “It’s great to be recognised for our technical work at such a prestigious event.”
The British Sandwich and Food to Go Association’s Gethin Evans, added: “The 2016 competition has produced some truly epic sandwiches for the final. This year we had several new contestants lined up against some seasoned campaigners. Kim’s ingenuity was evident from the off with three of her creations making it through to the final.”
